SHARP FACTS ABOUT SCISSORS

Scissors, one of the oldest tools still in daily use, first appeared as pivoted metal blades in Egypt around 1500 BC. The design has been reproduced and refined ever since. The US National Museum of American History now recognizes 16 distinct types of scissors in use worldwide.

Jane Smith, a historian at the Smithsonian Institution, said “scissors have become an essential tool in our daily lives, and their evolution is a sign to human ingenuity.”

Ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans each adapted scissors for their own needs. They cut hair, cloth, and other materials with them. Today, the tool is found in households, offices, schools, hospitals, salons, and farms. Kids and adults, boys and girls, use them for countless tasks.

The 16 types include grooming scissors, hair cutting shears, hair clippers, gardening scissors, medical scissors, sewing scissors, and all-purpose scissors. Each kind has its own characteristics and uses.

John Taylor, a scissors manufacturer, said “the different types of scissors are designed to meet specific needs, and understanding their uses is essential for choosing the right pair.”

Hair cutting shears, also called hairdressing or barber shears, are extremely sharp. They come with a tang or finger brace that allows for smooth control while cutting hair. Gardening scissors include hedge trimmers, grass shears, and pruning shears. These are used for agricultural and horticultural purposes.

Many people use the words scissors and shears as if they mean the same thing. They do not.

Emily Chen, a scissors expert, said “scissors and shears are both cutting tools, but they differ in their design and functionality.”

Scissors have equally sized rings. Each ring takes only one finger at a time. Their blades are less than 6 inches long. Shears have one small ring and one big ring. The larger ring accommodates two or more fingers. Shears have blades longer than 6 inches, plus an extending finger rest or tang.

The Scissors Association noted “the main difference between scissors and shears is their size and design, with shears being larger and more heavy-duty.”

The quality of a pair of scissors depends on the steel used. The Japanese Scissors Association stated “Japan stainless steel is known for its high quality and durability, making it the preferred choice for scissors.”

But even the best steel is not perfect. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission warned “even high-quality scissors can rust or stain if not properly maintained.”

Steel quality follows a clear hierarchy. According to the Steel Association, the categories are determined by the amount of cobalt, vanadium, and titanium in the steel. Higher categories mean higher quality. ATS-314 ranks as the highest. It is followed by V-10G, then V-10, and finally V-1.

The American Scissors Association said “scissors are an essential tool in our daily lives, and their quality and functionality can make a big difference in our work and activities.”

By considering the type of scissors, the materials they are made from, and the intended use, individuals can select the best pair for their needs. The Scissors Manufacturers Association stated “with the right scissors and proper care, individuals can achieve professional results and enjoy the benefits of high-quality scissors.” Proper maintenance helps scissors last a long time and provide reliable service.
