GTA 6 Collector’s Edition at $400 Excludes Game, Fans Angry

Grand Theft Auto Vi Collector S Edition Box

NEW YORK — Rockstar Games has opened pre-orders for a $400 Collector’s Edition of Grand Theft Auto VI that does not include the game. The package, sold exclusively through Rockstar’s online store, ships with a steelbook case, an art book, a map and other physical collectibles, but no disc and no digital code. The omission has drawn criticism from fans and industry observers alike, and it is not difficult to see why.

A buyer who pays $400 for the Collector’s Edition still needs to buy the game separately. The standard edition is priced at $69.99.

A $99.99 Ultimate Edition includes the game and additional digital content. Under the hood, then, the arithmetic is unusually stark: the premium tier sits above the version that actually plays.

An unprecedented price point

The $400 price for a collector’s edition without the game is unprecedented for a major AAA release, though some limited editions of other titles have approached similar figures when the game itself was bundled in. The Collector’s Edition is a limited run, though Rockstar has not disclosed exact quantities. Fans on X, formerly Twitter, and Reddit have called the move greedy and anti-consumer.

Rockstar has not yet responded to requests for comment. The company, founded in 1998 and headquartered in New York City, is known for the Grand Theft Auto, Red Dead Redemption and Max Payne series.

The monetisation record behind the backlash

Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar’s parent company, has a history of aggressive monetisation strategies. Microtransactions in Grand Theft Auto Online have generated billions of dollars in revenue since that mode launched in 2013. The original Grand Theft Auto V, released the same year, has sold over 200 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling video games of all time.

Take-Two was founded in 1993 and publishes under labels including Rockstar Games, 2K and Private Division. The detail that matters for buyers is the release schedule.

Grand Theft Auto VI is set for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on May 26, 2026, following delays from its original 2025 window. The game was officially announced in February 2022, and its first trailer, released in December 2023, broke YouTube records with over 90 million views in 24 hours. It is set in the fictional state of Leonida, inspired by Florida, and features the series’ first female protagonist, Lucia.

The controversy lands squarely in an ongoing debate about consumer value and corporate profit motives in gaming, and it arrives with pre-orders expected to be strong regardless. What to watch next is whether Rockstar breaks its silence on the bundle, and whether the limited run sells through anyway — the answer will say as much about the market as about the publisher.
