Technical Analysis Finds GTA 6 Will Perform Better on PS5 Than Xbox

The hardware gap between the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S has been a subject of debate since both consoles launched. A new technical analysis, published by PlayStation LifeStyle, now puts that debate into sharp focus for one of the most anticipated games in years: Grand Theft Auto VI. The report, which examined each console’s specifications against the demands of Rockstar Games’ upcoming open-world title, concludes that GTA VI will run better on the PS5 than on either Xbox model.

The finding hinges on how each machine handles data. The PS5’s custom solid-state drive and unified memory architecture, according to the analysis, give it a measurable lead in texture streaming and load times.

Those are not abstract benchmarks. In a game where a player can drive across the entire map in minutes, the speed at which the console feeds data to the GPU determines whether the world renders smoothly or stutters. The PS5’s dedicated decompression hardware, the report stated, allows it to push assets to the graphics processor faster than either the Xbox Series X or the Series S can manage.

Microsoft’s lower-cost Series S faces the most significant compromises. Its reduced GPU and memory bandwidth, the analysis found, will force developers to lower resolution targets and potentially reduce draw distances compared to the PS5 and Series X versions.

The Series X, while closer in raw power to the PS5, still trails in asset streaming speed. The difference comes down to how each storage system handles decompression. Sony’s approach, the report argued, is more efficient for the kind of seamless city rendering GTA VI is expected to require.

Take-Two Interactive, the game’s publisher, has not issued a statement addressing the performance gap. Rockstar Games also declined to comment on the record. Their silence leaves the technical analysis as the most concrete information available, roughly six months before the game’s scheduled launch window.

This is not the first time the PS5’s storage architecture has been positioned as a differentiator. Sony Interactive Entertainment has consistently marketed the console’s internal design as a key advantage.

The GTA VI analysis reinforces that positioning with a specific, high-profile test case. Rockstar’s open worlds are among the most technically demanding in the industry. If the PS5’s hardware delivers a visibly smoother experience in the next Grand Theft Auto, the gap could influence console purchasing decisions during the game’s launch period.

The report arrives at a moment when the console market is mature but not static. Both Sony and Microsoft have released mid-generation refreshes, but the underlying architectures remain the same.

For Xbox owners, the news means that even the Series X, Microsoft’s most powerful console, will not match the PS5 on asset streaming in GTA VI. For Series S owners, the gap is wider. The analysis did not quantify the difference in concrete terms — no frame-rate targets or resolution numbers were given — but the hardware specifications leave little room for ambiguity.

Rockstar has not yet revealed final system requirements or performance targets for any platform. That will come closer to launch. For now, the technical assessment from PlayStation LifeStyle stands as the most detailed public look at how GTA VI will run on each console.

The conclusion is straightforward: the PS5 version will play better. The reasons are technical, rooted in design choices made years before the game was announced.

The consequences will be visible on screen.
