Safety Risks and Incident Reports

The Minnesota-based company has received 63 reports of the laminators smoking, melting and overheating, the federal agency said. Investigators say five reports stated the laminator caught fire and another reported minor property damage. No injuries have been reported so far.

Identifying the Recalled Model

The affected product is the Scotch-brand thermal laminator with model number TL1302Z. The laminators are light gray and white with gray accents and the word “Scotch” printed in gray on the front. The laminating slot is about 13 inches wide and it comes with a carrying handle on the right side of the machine. The model number can be found on a sticker on the bottom of the unit as well as on the product packaging.

Refund and Disposal Instructions

Consumers should stop using the unit, unplug it, carefully cut the power cord and take a photo showing the serial number and cut cord. Customers can fill out an online form at 3M’s website or call 800-772-4337 to request a full refund issued by check. Customers should throw the unit away according to local and state laws governing electronics recycling.

Contact Hours and Support Details

Customers seeking assistance with the recall can contact 3M by calling toll-free 800-772-4337 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Central time on Monday through Friday, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. This support window is specified in the recall announcement to ensure timely help for affected consumers.

In addition to phone support, consumers can request a refund online by visiting 3M’s website and clicking on “Recall Information” at the top of the page. The online process requires users to fill out a recall registration form, confirm their laminator’s inclusion in the recall, and upload a photo showing the unplugged power cord cut.

Once the online form is submitted and verified, 3M will issue a full refund by check, as stated by federal officials overseeing the recall. This refund method applies regardless of whether the request is made via phone or online submission.
