Save the Children Report Exposes Systemic Safeguard Gaps in Youth Esports

Millions of children participating in the booming global esports industry face significant risks of online harassment, financial exploitation, and threats to their education, according to a new report from Save the Children.

The Scale of Youth Participation and Protection Gaps

An estimated 300 million children play esports games such as League of Legends, Fortnite, Call of Duty: Warzone, Valorant, and EA Sports FC. While these titles offer a raft of opportunities for young people to develop skills and pursue passions, the rapid growth of this sector has outpaced efforts to protect these children. The industry’s expansion has occurred faster than governance and accountability mechanisms can adapt, leaving participating minors often without adequate child protection measures and support systems.

The report benchmarks the current experience of Youth Esports Athletes against the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. This international framework sets out the fundamental rights of every child and serves as a tool to map key risks within the esports sector. Save the Children’s findings draw on a review of academic research including 274 studies and consultations with six stakeholders across the esports ecosystem. These efforts aim to identify nine key areas where children face specific risks that the industry needs to address going forward.

Safeguarding Failures and Educational Disruption

The investigation highlights concerns that some young players dedicate extensive hours to training and competition with little oversight, causing their education to suffer. Late-night gaming schedules and the demands of competitive play can negatively affect cognitive performance, mood regulation, and overall well-being. These factors combine to create an environment where a child’s right to education and health is compromised by the pressure to perform in a digital arena.

Children aspiring to professional careers may also be vulnerable to exploitation as they navigate an industry with inconsistent child protection standards and limited accountability mechanisms. The report identifies safeguarding failures as one of nine major challenges, alongside threats to ongoing education and exposure to gambling-related content. Without consistent standards, young athletes lack the safety nets necessary to prevent harm while building their careers.

Harassment, Exploitation, and Lack of Inclusivity

Young participants in esports often face online harassment, sexism, financial exploitation, and exposure to gambling-related content. The report specifically notes that girls remain dramatically underrepresented, making up less than 1% of professional players. This lack of inclusivity extends to LGBTQIA+ and disabled players, creating an environment that does not celebrate diversity or promote equity.

The absence of adequate protections at tournaments and live events further exacerbates these issues. When children participate in organized esports, they are exposed to discrimination and exclusion that can have lasting impacts on their mental health and social development. The industry currently struggles to keep pace with the need for robust systems that ensure every child feels safe regardless of their background or identity.

The Need for Concrete Policy Changes

While esports can provide children with opportunities to form friendships and pursue their passions, the report warns that current governance has struggled to keep up with industry growth. Theo Toresson, a psychologist at Save the Children and gaming expert, stated that participation should never come at the expense of children’s rights. This sentiment underscores the urgent need for the esports ecosystem to evolve into a space that champions child rights alongside professional ambition.

The encouraging part is that addressing these gaps requires clear policy changes and accountability mechanisms rather than vague promises. Stakeholders across the sector must work together to establish consistent standards that prioritize the safety and well-being of young players. As the industry continues to expand, ensuring that child protection measures are implemented effectively will be essential for sustainable growth.

Parents and guardians should remain vigilant about the hours their children spend gaming and the environments they engage with online. Early findings suggest that monitoring training schedules and educational impact can help mitigate risks before they escalate. If you have concerns about your child’s involvement in esports or signs of exploitation, it is advisable to consult relevant support organizations and legal authorities.

The Hidden Dangers of Microtransactions and Financial Exploitation

Save the Children’s report reveals that financial exploitation represents a critical and often overlooked risk for young esports participants. The investigation details how children are frequently exposed to predatory monetization practices within popular titles, including loot boxes, skin gambling, and in-game purchases that target developing minds. The report specifically flags that these mechanics can mirror the psychological triggers of gambling, leaving minors vulnerable to significant financial loss and debt. Without robust safeguards, young players can accumulate thousands of dollars in charges, compromising family stability and their own long-term financial security.

Furthermore, the research highlights a disturbing link between these monetization models and the normalization of gambling behaviors among youth. The report notes that exposure to gambling-related content is one of the nine key risk areas identified, with children as young as primary school age engaging with systems designed to encourage spending through chance-based rewards. This early desensitization to risk poses serious threats to children’s economic understanding and mental well-being, necessitating immediate industry intervention.

Real-World Exploitation Cases Mirror Industry Risks

The Save the Children report warns that children navigating an industry with inconsistent child protection standards are particularly vulnerable to exploitation. This concern is not merely theoretical, as real-world incidents demonstrate the severity of threats facing minors in the digital age. Recent investigations into child exploitation have led to arrests involving hundreds of felony counts, highlighting how predators target vulnerable individuals online.

For instance, a Cabot man named Mark Czerwonka was taken into custody after detectives executed a search warrant at his residence. The investigation began when police received a cyber tip about the uploading of images involving apparent child sexual abuse material. During the search, investigators discovered electronic devices containing 20 images of suspected child sexual abuse material, leading to charges including distributing matter depicting sexually explicit conduct involving a child.

Further evidence was secured when detectives processed seized devices and observed videos constituting video voyeurism. These cases illustrate the type of predatory behavior that esports children might encounter if adequate safeguards are absent. Without consistent standards and accountability mechanisms, young athletes lack the safety nets necessary to prevent harm while building their careers in a sector where governance has struggled to keep pace with growth.
