Sony WH-1000XM4 Relaunch Challenges Bose, Apple in Premium Audio Market

TOKYO, August 8 — The noise-canceling headphone market is entering a new phase of competition, as Sony’s relaunch of its WH-1000XM4 model at a lower price point signals a sharper battle for dominance in an industry worth billions. At the heart of this shift lies a straightforward calculation: premium audio is no longer reserved for those willing to pay top dollar.

Sony’s decision to reposition the WH-1000XM4 at approximately $249.99 places it against key competitors including the Bose QuietComfort 45, which retails for $329.00, and Apple’s AirPods Max, priced at $549.00. For consumers, the message is clear.

Performance once locked behind premium pricing is now within broader reach.

A Market in Motion

The global noise-canceling headphone market was valued at approximately $8.2 billion in 2023, according to market research firm Grand View Research. That figure is projected to grow to $15.6 billion by 2028, suggesting sustained demand even as competition intensifies. Within this landscape, Sony holds a commanding position, controlling approximately 26 percent of the global wireless headphone market — a share it appears determined to defend.

That defense is being tested. Chinese manufacturers Xiaomi and Huawei collectively held 22 percent of the market in 2023, making them formidable challengers.

Their rise has forced established players to recalibrate, balancing innovation with accessibility.

Customer Satisfaction and Brand Loyalty

Sony’s strategy leans heavily on reputation. The WH-1000XM4 features 40mm drivers and supports the SBC, AAC, and aptX HD Bluetooth codecs. It offers up to 30 hours of battery life with noise cancellation enabled — a figure that still competes well with newer models.

Consumer sentiment appears to reflect that strength. Consumer electronics research firm NPD Group reported in December 2024 that Sony’s WH-series headphones maintained the highest customer satisfaction ratings among premium noise-canceling models, scoring 87 out of 100 compared to Bose’s 84 and Apple’s 82.

These numbers matter. In a category where user experience is paramount, satisfaction can be as influential as specifications.

Competitive Pressures and Market Shifts

Bose, founded in 1964 by Amar Bose and headquartered in Framingham, Massachusetts, held approximately 18 percent of the global noise-canceling headphone market in 2023. Its QuietComfort line has long defined the category, but the pricing gap with Sony’s relaunched model narrows its appeal to budget-conscious buyers. Apple entered the over-ear noise-canceling market in December 2020 with the AirPods Max, capturing roughly 8 percent market share by 2023 — a testament to brand strength rather than price competitiveness.

At $549.00, the AirPods Max remains the most expensive option, targeting a niche segment of the market.

Looking Ahead

All eyes are on how competitors will respond. Will Bose adjust its pricing? Could Apple follow suit with a more accessible model?

And how will Chinese manufacturers leverage their growing influence? The noise-canceling headphone market shows no signs of slowing.

With consumer expectations rising and new entrants reshaping the playing field, the next chapter will likely be written by those who balance innovation with accessibility — and who understand that, in this space, value is increasingly measured not just in decibels canceled, but in dollars saved.
